📚 Understanding Kentucky School Calendar Requirements
There has been some discussion recently about school calendars, so I wanted to take a moment to share some important information with our community.
In Kentucky, public school districts are required by law to meet a minimum of 170 student attendance days and 1,062 instructional hours each school year. This requirement is outlined in KRS 158.070.
You may also hear about some districts adding extra minutes to their school day in order to finish the school year earlier. These districts are operating under what is known as a variable student instructional year (calendar), which is allowed under KRS 158.070(9). This option gives districts flexibility to meet the required 1,062 instructional hours by adjusting the length of the school day rather than strictly following a traditional 170-day calendar.
School calendars are approved by each local Board of Education during the prior school year, and districts must operate within the calendar that has been officially adopted.
There have also been rumors circulating about potential “calamity days” being approved during the current legislative session. At this time, no such measure has been approved by the legislature, and districts must continue to follow existing law and approved calendars.
As always, our focus remains on doing what is best for students while meeting all state requirements.
📢 Calendar Update – Make-Up Days Scheduled
McCreary County Schools will be using the following dates as make-up days due to missed instructional time:
🗓️ Friday, March 27
🗓️ Friday, April 3
🗓️ Monday, June 1
We appreciate the flexibility and support of our students, families, and staff as we work to ensure all instructional days are met.
Together, we will continue Building a Legacy and keeping our focus on student success.
